Tirunesh Dibaba has been conferred with high military honours by the federal government of Ethiopia.


Tirunesh Dibaba, the world’s fastest marathoner and one of the greatest distance runners in history, has been conferred with high military honours by the federal government of Ethiopia.

This is in recognition of her outstanding performances and achievements in Olympics and other world championships.


Tirunesh Dibaba, who was born on October 12, 1982, has won five Olympic medals including three golds. She also has a record-breaking six world championships medals including two golds. Her first gold came at the 2001 World Championships in Athletics when she won 1500m in a new world record time of 3:59.78. In the same championship, she also set a second world record time of 4:05.08 over 1500m, beating her own previous best time from 1999 (4:06.68).


She also won silver medals in both 1500m and 3000m at the 2004 Athens Olympics and 2007 Osaka World Championships respectively. Her first medal came as part of an Ethiopian sweep of all three podium places at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics where she took gold in both events - 1500m and 3000m; she had previously won bronze medals in both events at previous editions of the competition
